My Accidental Start In Real Estate

I did not plan on selling real estate. Before my three kids started school, I was a CPA – stable, predictable, and not the life I wanted as a mother. 

I needed flexibility. So when my youngest started school, I got my real estate license on a whim.

Originally, I thought property management was my path. But where I lived in Florida, those opportunities meant commuting to the east coast. So I already had the license and decided to give residential sales a try. I jumped in during 2009, and despite none of it being planned, it turned out to be the best professional decision I ever made.

From Geographic Farming To Building A $90M Business

When I entered real estate, I committed to geographic farming real estate in a community that was not fancy or luxury-just an average price point. But I treated that farm like my business depended on it, because it did. Over time, that single farm became the engine of my entire business.

From that foundation, my team and I grew to $90 million a year in production. The secret was layered systems: 

  • CRM that tracked every lead,
  • Listing presentations refined through hundreds of reps
  • Team culture built around accountability. These were the same systems that would later carry us into luxury.

According to a study by Markets and Data, the global luxury residential real estate market is expected to reach over $1 trillion by 2032. It was a steady, long-term growth trajectory. The opportunity was massive. But here I was, stuck at one luxury deal a year for a decade as shown in the table below.

I thought I was making progress. I wasn’t. That market was expanding around me, and I was barely touching it — leaving years of income, growth, and opportunity on the table.

I Was Celebrating One Deal Instead Of Building A Pipeline

For the first ten years of my career, I closed exactly one luxury deal per year. Every time, I threw a little party: “Yay, I did my million-dollar deal-now I’m done!” I literally joked about being “one and done.” Looking back, I was treating luxury as a lucky break instead of a repeatable strategy.

But Here’s How Avoidance Can Look Like Contentment

I was not actively avoiding luxury – I just was not pursuing it. I had convinced myself that luxury was a separate world requiring a different set of skills. That belief kept me stuck, and it is the same belief holding back thousands of agents right now. The real estate mindset shift I needed was about believing I already had what it took.
